Malachite – Democratic Republic of Congo Origin | Natural Specimen

A vivid green Malachite specimen sourced from the copper belt of the Democratic Republic of Congo — the world's dominant source of gem-grade Malachite and the origin of the most visually striking material available to collectors today.

Geological profile:

Congolese Malachite forms as a secondary copper mineral within the oxidation zones of major copper-cobalt ore deposits. As copper-rich groundwater interacts with carbonate host rock under specific pH and temperature conditions, copper carbonate hydroxide precipitates in successive layers — producing Malachite's signature concentric banding pattern. Each band represents a distinct episode of mineral deposition, making every specimen a visible record of changing geochemical conditions over time. The intensity of the green is directly tied to copper concentration — and Congolese deposits, sitting within one of the richest copper provinces on earth, consistently produce material with exceptional colour saturation.

Specimen highlights:

  • Deep, saturated green with clearly defined banding — the hallmark of high-grade Congolese material
  • Distinctive botryoidal or layered growth formations displaying complex internal patterning
  • Strong colour contrast between light and dark green bands, indicating multiple depositional phases within a geochemically active environment
  • Natural and untreated — no stabilisation, no dye, no synthetic enhancement

Why collectors value Congolese Malachite:

  • The DRC copper belt produces Malachite with a depth of colour and banding complexity that material from other localities — Zambia, Australia, the Urals — rarely matches at equivalent scale
  • Each specimen's banding pattern is entirely unique, determined by the specific geochemical sequence of its formation — no two pieces carry the same internal structure
  • Large, high-quality Malachite specimens are becoming harder to source as industrial copper mining increasingly prioritises ore extraction over mineral specimen recovery
  • A foundational piece for any serious African mineral collection — connecting geology, economic history, and one of the continent's most important mineral provinces

Shipping & returns

Orders ship across South Africa. Free shipping applies to qualifying orders of R700 or more. Returns are accepted within 7 days, subject to the store policy.

Care & cleansing

Keep your piece dry, avoid perfume and harsh chemicals, and store it separately. Cleanse your crystal gently with smoke, sound or moonlight where appropriate.
